The Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center (FADC) is an interfaith service for the residents of Farmingdale and the surrounding communities. It is a non-profit organization with the purpose of reaching out in support of families who are caring for the elderly living at home, especially those with physical or cognitive limitations who are no longer able to participate in their normal social groups.
Farmingdale Adult Day Care was established in 1995.

We are open to members of all faiths, and guided by cooperative effort of
Farmingdale’s clergy and congregations including:
Farmingdale United Methodist Church
St. Kilian’s Roman Catholic Church
St. Luke’s Lutheran Church
St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church
Farmingdale Adult Day Care is a social model program. Adult day programs are usually described as either social or medical (health) model programs. Social model programs offer socialization, cultural, educational and recreational activities as well as a nutritious hot noon time meal.
We provide supervised socialization and a variety of appropriate activities designed to engage and motivate the clients. We strive to maintain and stimulate mental and physical capabilities to the best of the client's abilities. This ministry also provides time for family members to make personal appointments, do shopping, or simply to take a quiet, refreshing moment for themselves.
The Day Care Center is currently providing services on Monday thru Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

A typical day at Farmingdale Adult Day Care begins with a light breakfast and
general conversation. Each client is greeted warmly, assisted to a seat, served a light breakfast, and coffee or tea. A name badge is affixed to each
client and volunteer to facilitate conversation. Soon after everyone is settled,
a staff member or volunteer will proceed to the ‘current events’ item on the
agenda. This entails reading appropriate Newspaper articles to the group and
expanding on conversation topics. Specific features in Newsday, such as “This
Date in History”, “Today’s Birthdays”, and “Horoscopes” are read daily. A
‘trivia question’, a joke or two, and an amusing anecdote usually follow current
events. |

Exercise is followed by a scheduled event. This may be entertainment (sing-a-longs, reminiscing, musicians, lecturers or other outside entertainers), arts and crafts therapy, pet therapy (a supervised visit to the center by a furry friend), intergenerational activities (visits by FUMC nursery school), or “celebrate the day” (lectures and activities using FADC’s various resource books). Most scheduled events are listed on our monthly calendar. Generally, when a scheduled event does not last until lunch, volunteers or staff will conduct a blackboard activity (group word games) or a game (appropriate physical games designed especially for our clients) to bridge the gap. |

The next item on the agenda is lunch. Delicious and nutritious hot lunches are
provided through the services of Daleview Nursing Home. |

The success of FADC depends largely on the assistance of volunteers. There are many opportunities and areas of service in which volunteers are utilized. Each volunteer has a different amount of time and talent to share with FADC.

Volunteers who are routine-oriented may enjoy assisting in the preparation and serving of meals. This may involve slicing and buttering bread or bagels for meals, preparing and serving coffee or tea or juice to the clients, setting the table, preparing the luncheon plates or serving the meals. Although we use disposable plates and eating utensils, cleaning up after meals is also a very important function at FADC and would entail clearing and wiping the tables and counters, washing serving utensils, and putting everything away. Creative volunteers are always welcome. Many of our volunteers design simple games or craft activities for the clients to construct. Other volunteers are needed to assist the clients in performing the steps necessary to complete the various activities. |
Another way to serve FADC is to offer minimal physical assistance, encourage participation, or to simply socialize with the clients. Other volunteers offer their organizational skills to the Program and may assist in the operation or promotion of FADC. Each volunteer brings different gifts to the Program. All volunteers are encouraged to participate in the activities of their preference at FADC. Often, a volunteer doesn’t realize the talents they have to offer until they have participated in a day at FADC. Regardless of their area of service, all volunteers are vital to the success of our program and are greatly appreciated.
